Buenos Aires Mayor Jorge Macri plans to welcome 110 Minerva University students from 46 countries at city hall as the innovative university opens its academic year at its Argentina location.
The Sep 6 meeting will be Macri’s second with Minerva University students in less than a year. Upon being elected mayor last December, Macri visited the university’s residence hall in Buenos Aires. Students asked about his personal and political journey, his plans for the next four years, and the challenges he faces as mayor of the second-largest city in South America.
Minerva is a nonprofit university that offers an innovative educational model focused on developing real-world skills through active learning. Students live and learn on four different continents throughout their studies, and are taught using a curriculum developed from research in teaching and learning methods.
“Minerva wishes to strengthen ties with the residents of this vibrant city and continue fostering collaborations that benefit the students and the community of Buenos Aires,” said Mike Magee, Ph.D., president of Minerva University.
“During their time in Buenos Aires, Minerva students gain unique perspectives on the local reality,” Magee added. “In turn, they contribute global ideas and perspectives to the challenges the city faces."
The presence of Minerva University in Buenos Aires underscores the commitment to fostering international perspectives and cultural immersion. Through projects that directly involve local communities and organizations, students bring a global perspective to Argentina while exploring its rich cultural diversity.
Minerva enriches Buenos Aires with collaborative learning opportunities. Students recently worked to improve the quality of life through organizations like CIPPEC (Center for the Implementation of Public Policies for Equity and Growth), where they played an active role in organizing the International Forum on Extreme Heat Adaptation. They delved into projects aimed at poverty reduction (with the Urban Integration Secretariat under the Ministry of Social Development), and initiatives using Artificial Intelligence with companies like NotCo, a tech-and-food company known for its research and development.
Minerva University is unique because its students rotate through leading cities on four continents, starting in San Francisco and including Buenos Aires. A U.S.-based university, Minerva offers a curriculum developed through the science of learning. Minerva University has been honored as the ”Most Innovative University in the World” for three consecutive years in the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI).
The university's slogan summarizes the mission: “Four years. Four continents. One life-changing education.” (“Cuatro años. Cuatro continentes. Una educación que cambia vidas.”)
